Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The University of Brighton has a long history in practice and scholarship around graphic narrative. The Comics and Graphic Narratives Research Excellence Group champions, promotes and celebrates this research, building on the Graphic Brighton conference, which has been held on campus since 2014, attracting comics researchers from across the globe.

Renowned sequential art creators who have studied or worked at the university include former Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, animator and graphic designer Woodrow Phoenix, award winning cartoonist Isabel Greenberg, experimental novelist Graham Rawle, and beloved children’s illustrator Raymond Briggs. Work featured at the top of this page is by Brighton based scholars and practitioners Daniel Locke and Ottillie Hainsworth.

Comics are a relatively young field of academic enquiry, but one with increasing far-reaching implications as seen in conferences such as Graphic Medicine, and the International Graphic Novels and Comics Conference. University of Brighton researchers have participated in this growing body of conferences and our scholarship is being widely and successfully published.
