Wolfson Foundation Visit of Funded Dual Temperature-Hypoxic Environmental Chamber

Activity: EventsWorkshop

Description

The university continues to showcase our leading role in environmental research with the launch of a new state-of-the-art environmental chamber.

The newly opened chamber, based in our Environmental Extremes Lab at Falmer campus, gives researchers and students an experiential learning opportunity by simulating extreme environmental conditions. Step inside the chamber and they’ll face temperatures as low as -20°C or as high as 50°C, extreme humidity, or even altitudes nearly as high as Mount Kilimanjaro.

The launch was celebrated with a visit to the Meads Building facilities from the Wolfson Foundation, whose grant helped make the project a reality. Guests including Paul Ramsbottom OBE, CEO of the Wolfson Foundation, and Graham Peters, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Sussex, joined university staff for a tour and demonstration of both the new chamber and the visions for its impact.

The chamber demonstrates our commitment to driving key research on how the body deals with climate extremes – and what we can do about it. And it’s already transforming teaching and research. At the launch event, guests were not only treated to a simulation of 35°C heat but were also take part in a live demonstration of how ice pops offer a cooling solution to high temperatures. It was a powerful glimpse into the future of the project; giving students and researchers a way to experience, and then problem-solve, extreme climates in a hands-on setting.
