Description
Speculative fiction has long been considered a tool of political intervention. Since the 1970s, feminist and postcolonial writers in particular have produced speculative texts that “draw people away from common sense reality to an alternative political world” (Mukerji 2021). At the same time, political actors are well-known for weaving ‘speculative fictions’ that leverage power in the present by conjuring imaginary futures. In this paper I will consider a recent fictional work that employs the speculative mode: Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune 2052-72 (Abdelhadi and O’Brien 2022). I will focus on one of the text’s twelve interwoven narratives, ‘S. Addams on the Church Fathers of Staten Island,’ reading this account in relation to the fictions of Christian nationalism and anti-gender politics that are increasingly prominent in a range of contexts around the world.Period | 10 Sept 2024 |
