ABSTRACT There are extraordinary and unique histories behind our daily cross-cultural interactions originating from the movements and migrations of our parents and ancestors that we perhaps take for granted in the hyper-diverse globalised early 21st century world that we inhabit today. Still, in this time today, human interactions with cross-cultural encounters are avoided and even suffocated by some people, through fear. However, an embracement of cross-cultural interactions through curiosity and willingness to seek further learning about the human-race can serve for the development of new knowledge and understandings by the congruency of our life experiences. This is cross-cultural education. This presentation will present briefly on the speaker’s first impression as a minority-ethnic group child, on seeing cross-cultural interactions in the Netherlands, and how this transformed his view of the country from the implanted stereotypical perspectives. He will then briefly discuss learning from his academic and school curriculum research on cross-cultural encounters over the ages, by juxtaposing two episodes of mass-migration and settlement in the British Isles. He will argue how the stories of our lived experiences and shared histories over time can be used as exemplary moments: for reflecting; for re-learning; and for reinforcing civic values of tolerance and mutual respect of those with different faiths and beliefs.
