    Whatdowegainindefiningandresearchingsocialproblemsas‘objective’,‘quantifiable’,and‘measurable’phenomena?Inhisinfluential1971paper,HerbertBlumercritiquedthesocialsciencesforchasingwhatisusuallytakenasthe‘objective’aspectofsocialproblems.Guidedbytheirobjective,quantifiableformulation,weoftenpurportknowingwhatasocialproblemisbeforewebeginresearchingit—inotherwords,weputthecartbeforethehorse.Usingmyresearchonpovertyasanexample,Iwilllogicallyexaminebothrealistandconstructivistapproachestothestudyofsocialproblemsandpointoutsomecommonerrorsineach.Iwillarguethatinresearchingsocialproblems,psychologyhascometosufferfromwhatFrancisBaconcalledtheidolatheatri—thedogmatictendenciesofresearchborneoutofwronglawsofdemonstration.
