Research Integrity in academic publishing- Research and Knowledge Exchange Week 2025

Research Integrity in academic publishing

Questionable practices in academic publishing threaten research integrity. Issues include predatory publishing, paper mills, authorship for sale, and hijacked journals undermine research credibility. Even well-regarded directories face these challenges, affecting trust in open-access publishing. Citation coercion, fake reviews, and review mills, even with well-known publishers, along with citation contamination, clubs, and cartels jeopardise publication and citation integrity. Generative AI introduces new challenges, too.

This workshop explores why researchers publish in questionable journals, the potential for reputable journals to engage in unethical practices, and whether content quality outweighs the publication platform. It aims to provide best practices for identifying red flags and promote a more vigilant approach to addressing these issues. Participants will engage in group discussions about real scenarios, in a safe space for enhancing awareness.
