    Description

“The embodied Self as a Mediating Entity within a Mediated Environment.” Paper.

Abstract: In Straw Dogs, John Gray reminds us, that we ourselves are technological devices within a complex network, invented by ancient bacterial communities as a means of genetic survival. Furthermore, he argues, scientific enquiry demonstrates that humans cannot be other than irrational (Gray 2002). In other words, we are not the singular, autonomous and rational subjects we believe ourselves to be, but we have trouble feeling our way to other ways of being. This paper turns towards the embodied self as a mediating entity within a mediated environment, and explores the possibilities afforded by duration, empathy and virtual and physical encounters.
