Description

On 29 October 2025, the University of Brighton hosted the final dissemination event of the ESRC-funded project Activating Employers: The Politics of Regulation in the UK, US and Australia. Led by Dr Anne Daguerre, the event brought together researchers, policymakers, employer reps, and union voices to explore how governments can use public procurement to drive fairer employment outcomes. Presentations covered findings from over 130 interviews across three countries, showing how employment services prioritise speed over job quality. Speakers from DWP, the care and construction sectors, and partner universities discussed ways to embed fair work standards into public contracts and employment support. The event closed with a call for more strategic, long-term collaboration between government, employers, and civil society to improve labour market outcomes.
