Research Uncovered: Fashioning a History of Nudism
What can fashion historians and theorists learn from the ideas and practices of people who reject clothes completely? Dr Annebella Pollen, a clothes-loving academic, has spent many years looking at British nudist publications from the 1920s to the 1970s, in order to understand why nudists (also known as naturists) claimed that they want to 'kill, burn and destroy' fashion. The results, newly published as the book Nudism in a Cold Climate, brings nudists' words and images to light. In the process of writing the book, several of Annebella's fashion history colleagues asked why she was studying a subject where there are no clothes to look at. Naturists also asked why Annebella was so interested in the subject, given that she is not a practitioner herself. This presentation will share some insights from the book and provide some personal answers to these questions.
