Description
Dear partner,The very recent publication of the UKHSA report on the ‘Health Effects of Climate Change (HECC) in the UK – State of the Evidence 2023 makes it evident that climate change has and will have a major impact on human health across a multi-variety of services and priorities. The climate crisis is a health crisis, and not just an environmental issue but also a people issue. Climate change is the great intersectoral challenge of our time and is the biggest threat to public health. The unveiling of COP28 UAE Declaration on Climate and Health emphasises the role of a health perspective to accelerate the development of climate resilience across systems.
We would like to invite you as a key stakeholder and partner to develop a System-Wide Road Map to understand and create the condition for a resilient countrywide East Sussex whole system response to identified climate change impacts and associated health determinants. We would like to draw upon your knowledge and experience as a subject matter expert in your respective field to help us investigate climate change health impacts and to review plans and preparations for East Sussex as a ‘whole system’.
The workshops will advance climate and health resilience through a greater understanding of the local context of climate change impacts for our people (including health and wellbeing) and places (including infrastructure, nature and economy). The type of questions the workshops will seek to explore include: specifically what population groups, community assets or protective factors are affected by climate change in East Sussex; what do you already do for these groups, assets or factors through your policy remits; can you identify any gaps, facilitators/barriers or opportunities/tensions. A key output is identifying win-wins including collaborations, policy hooks and early actions, which improve resilience efficacy and deliver financial and resource efficiencies.
The development of the system-wide road map is being guided by a climate change Health Impact Assessment (HIA) process, which builds upon the work undertaken by previous assessments, such as the ‘ESCC Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment’. Stakeholder engagement is key to the HIA process, therefore, your support and contribution towards this work will be invaluable and greatly appreciated. Please join us for the first of our three Climate and Health Stakeholder Workshops. Please save the dates:
