Art that Moves

Description

Art that Moves is the third edition of a yearly research project running from 2024-2026 with a focus on migration, mobilities and the complexities of citizenship and identity in relation to art production, art and curation practices. For each year  (2024, 2025 & 2026) the programme has consisted of a curated conference, film screenings and workshops delivered by leading international artists and curators living and working in Asia and Europe, recruited/organised by Lead Curator Dr. Lucia King. 

In the edition that took place in 2026, my role as Supporting Curator was to research and organise an exhibition of artworks produced by a group of MA and PhD Fine Art students and alumni from the two Universities that hosted the Art that Moves programme on their campuses, the institutions that have supported the project financially: Central Saint Martins UAL and University of Brighton. 

This exhibition was researched and produced together with a second Supporting Curator, Reem Acason over a 5-month period (within Dr. King's curatorship). The exhibition run coincided with the week of presentations by the international guest speakers’ public talks. These presentations and film screenings, were delivered by: 

Isaac Leung (Curator, Hong Kong); Clare Chun-yu Liu (Artist, UK/Taiwan);

Whiskey Chow (Artist, UK/China); Parwana Haydar (Artist, Afghanistan/UK);
Alessio Antoniolli (Curator, international); Jeanette Ehlers (Artist, Trinidad/Denmark);
Lu Etienne (Curator, UK/Southeast Asia); Anke Hennig & Ganka Tretiak (Germany and Ukraine) and Lucia King (Curator & Artist UK/international) 

The exhibition included artworks by 20 artists including works by Reem Acason and I. Together with the conference, it engaged audiences from within the two host institutions, as well as general public who attended the programme due to wider publicity campaigns in the Brighton/South East region and in London.

Over a one-week period in April 2026, the estimated in-person audience numbers across both venues was 450. 

In the London context, Art that Moves was curated as the 3rd edition within a larger event called ‘Apparitions’ at Central Saint Martins, led by Alex Schady (Director, Art Programme, CSM). The project anticipates further editions in 2027-2028
